It's really amazing to me how popular Buddha statues have become. I understand it though: their serenity, combined with the Buddha's undogmatic spiritual outlook makes an unparalleled statement.

The Buddha is thought to have had 32 major and 80 lesser physical characteristics. Faithful Buddhist art tries to comply with all of those when making a Buddha statue. The most important of these characteristics are:

  • A bump on the head, like a royal turban
  • Long earlobes, symbolizing a listening ear
  • A wheel on the soles of his feet

On images of the Buddha's whole body, whether sitting or standing, you will always see his hands in a special position. This is called a Mudra. On this page you'll see one Buddha touch the ground with his hand, this is the Bhumi-sparsa-mudra: he called the earth as his witness to his many virtuous lives when he was attacked by god Mara. This important event, which precluded his enlightenment, is often depicted.

The other mudra on this page is the Abhaya-mudra, it symbolizes peace, no fear. Isn't that a great symbol to have in your home?

The Buddha busts and figures shown on this page for sale.
