What is mindfulness?

In our busy lives it's very easy to get wrapped up in everything but what works for us. Running from job to job, from chore to chore, dealing with clients, your boss etc... it can leave you stressed.

The only way to avoid getting worked up about that, is to take it slow every once in a while. One way of doing that daily, is by practicing mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation in which one is constantly brought back to what's here, right now. Whether it's through simply sitting still, forcing yourself to not put the music on... or by only opening your email at certain times of the day.

The study and practice of mindfulness is one of the areas where spirituality and psychology meet. The result is that you'll find both spiritual teachers, like Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, write about the topic, as well as psychologists like Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Thanks for the recommendations. I enjoy books on the subject of mindfulness. A good one I read this year was The Not So Big Life by Sarah Susanka. It's more about mindfulness than you might think.

The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters
Most of us have lives that are as cluttered with unwanted obligations as our attics are cluttered with things. The bigger-is-better idea that triggered the explosion of McMansions has spilled over to give us McLives. For many of us, our ability to find the time to do what we want to do has come to a grinding halt. Now we barely have time to take a breath before making the next call on our cell phone, while at the same time messaging someone else on our Blackberry. Our schedules are chaotic and overcommitted, leaving us so stressed that we are numb, yet we wonder why we cannot fall asleep at night.

    Buddhist ponderings

    • Taking refuge: vows, commitments, belief and faith

Since I took refuge, I find myself explaining what that means to me to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Because, after all, I did not suddenly become less of a skeptic. There are aspects of the Buddhism I’m being taught that I don’t relate to much at all. The main example is, always, the enormous amounts of [...] - 3 months ago

    • Universal Buddhist Refuge Prayer

In the Gelugpa Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism of the FPMT one is expected to take refuge in the three jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) twice daily (three times each), especially if one has already taken refuge formally. For me, as a former theosophist, anything sectarian is a problem. On the other hand, I did pick Buddhism as [...] - 4 months ago
