Top gifts for a nerdy teenager

By spirituality

A geeky teen will love any gift that either helps them adjust to normal people, or respects them for the geeks they are...

Here's a top 100 - based in part on what's popular among teens, and in part on just my idea of what I'd give a nerdy teenager.

The book I was reading...

Good books

These books are not what you'd normally expect to give a nerd. However, I was reading a Jane Austen Essays book the other day, and in it a former geek said that reading Jane Austen had helped them understand people better.

Let's face it: Elisabeth's sister Mary is pretty much a geek before the word was invented, wasn't she? (Talking Pride and Prejudice here).

Anyhow, one of the definitions of 'Geek' is surely simply a highschool student who is good at learning. They'll like a good book any time.

Laptops

A geeky teen without a laptop? Even with the iPad, that's not an option. Here's some of the most popular ones.

PC hardware

You really want to make a geek happy? Give them the hardware they asked for. Don't fuss about trying to surprise them, you'll probably merely give them something they didn't want in the first place. If they want an extra harddrive for their PC, I'm pretty sure that's what they meant.

After all - social graces being pretty much absent, you can be sure a geek means what they say: especially the teen nerd, who hasn't had much time yet to learn the ways of non-geeky human beings.

You can't have missed it: the iPad is THE hot geeky gift this year, and surely teens aren't immune.

Lighter than a netbook, they'll sure like one if they don't have one yet. I just ordered mine last week.

Smart Phones, iPhone

Not ready to go all out and buy your teen an iPad? Well, perhaps a smartphone is more in your price range. They hold music, go online and will train them in all the touch-screen moves they need for the rest of their lives. Not that they need training.

However, they'll never loose their way again: because these come with in built maps. How's that for helping them with their math?

A real nerd will always want an android phone, rather than an iPhone, a windows phone or even a Blackberry.

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is THE best most beautiful smartphone around right now.

A cute laptop bag for a cute geek

Just because she's a geek, doesn't mean your teen girl doesn't also want to have (some) style. One way to achieve that is to get a laptop bag that's cute as well as practical.

    • Best Lightweight touchscreen netbooks 2011

Netbooks with touchscreen sound like the best of both worlds: you can type, but you can also ignore the keyboard and just manage things through touch. However, now that there’s the iPad, I do think this line of products is going to struggle. However, a netbook does have software that’s much more compatible with your [...] - 18 months ago

    • Choosing an iPad 2, Tablet PC or netbook

Once things get really small, that keyboard starts to get in the way. It’s relatively heavy, and do you really need it? Perhaps a touchscreen is really all you need. Some of the netbooks do both: they give you a keyboard AND a touchscreen. Personally I think that’s just waste of space and material. For [...] - 18 months ago

    • How to choose a lightweight 13 inch laptop

Laptops and notebooks can be as fast and as versatile as your desktop PC. In fact, I’m typing this on my own 13.3 Asus laptop at home. It’s got a screen, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard attached and there you go: everything I might need. When I bought mine, I went for a 13.3 inch [...] - 18 months ago

    • How to choose a good netbook

Netbooks are easy to carry around, lightweight and small. Their main disadvantage is that they’re usually not equipped with the best hardware and will therefor have trouble with the latest software. That means they are likely to be slow when you’re trying to use two programs at once. Do take care: some are as heavy [...] - 18 months ago
