Zen Buddhist Planners and Date Books 2012

By spirituality

One of the most beautiful styles of spiritual art is no doubt the art inspired by Zen Buddhism. The planners on this page are all inspired by that Japanese tradition. Zen Buddhism started as the Mahayana Chan tradition in China, but got it's fame in the west through it's Japanese variant: Zen.

Inspiring gardens, poetry, and these days webdesign - Zen has become the buzz word for deceptively simple art and design. Lines, few colors - often black and white - a single flower, pebbles, water and rocks.

As a Buddhist tradition Zen also exemplifies simplicity: it is the path in which Awakening gets experienced in a flash, through the simple expedient of sitting meditation (zazen). Never mind that people sit for years before reaching Nirvana.

Deceptively simple, perhaps that is the way to describe Zen in it's many manifestations.

Thich Nhat Hanh

He's perhaps the most popular Buddhist teacher of our time: Thich Nhat Hanh. His style of Buddhism owes a lot to Zen Buddhism, which is his lineage. Still, his popular writings also use more general themes like the Buddhist eightfold path and that sort of thing.

I guess it is calendar buying season soon, isn't it? I (we) use a family planning calendar but I bet some of these are lovely.

    • Taking refuge: vows, commitments, belief and faith

Since I took refuge, I find myself explaining what that means to me to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Because, after all, I did not suddenly become less of a skeptic. There are aspects of the Buddhism I’m being taught that I don’t relate to much at all. The main example is, always, the enormous amounts of [...] - 3 months ago

    • Universal Buddhist Refuge Prayer

In the Gelugpa Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism of the FPMT one is expected to take refuge in the three jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) twice daily (three times each), especially if one has already taken refuge formally. For me, as a former theosophist, anything sectarian is a problem. On the other hand, I did pick Buddhism as [...] - 4 months ago
